Layer 8

Security is fundamentally about people, and everything we know about people is relevant to security. -- B. Schneier

Why I’ll never write a book.

I am covered in envy and admiration of the people I know who author (or co-author) books.  To work at such a long project, and finish it—that’s something I doubt I’ll ever be able to accomplish myself.  Once I write something, I hate to revisit it.  Hell, once I’ve figured something out as thoroughly as I think I need to, I hate to revisit it.  This is probably why I’m having so much trouble getting myself motivated to write my annual risk assessment report.

And it also gets in the way of my blogging.

Found this by tracing a referral in my logs:

Once they have found the answer, they do not often share it because the answer is obvious, and documenting the obvious is redundant. This attitude includes a tendency not to respond or speak up in groups, because the INTP feels that what he or she was going to say seems so obvious that no one would want to hear it.

Especially seeing as how I’m around (in a virtual sense) so damn many smart people.  Sooner or later, one of them will say what I’m thinking, and the chances are 50-50 that they’ll say it better than I would, so why should I bother?

Now, this doesn’t really apply in realtime, when there’s a very interesting conversation going on—then it’s hard to get me to shut up, because I get so excited when someone is on a topic that I’ve been thinking about, and they can get me past the place where I got stuck on my own.  But I have to work hard to remember that it’s not All About Me and what’s in my head, and I have to do the equivalent of sitting on my hands to let other people have a turn.  Yes, inside me is still the teacher’s pet who used to raise a hand and say, “Oh!  OH!!  MISTER KOTTER!”

(Cake found at Cake Wrecks.  Thanks to Alex, I now have a new addiction.)

So I can’t write about what I think is obvious.  And I can’t write about what seems to me to be non-obvious and interesting that involves other people, because what passes for “interesting” in my book is pretty likely to get me sued if I were to publish it.  So that just leaves things that are non-obvious and interesting about me, and ... see where I’m going here?

Yeah.  Unless I get another rant going, or the BSOFH makes another appearance, I’ll be lucky to have enough material to post once a month that isn’t better suited to the length of an instant message.

Then again, maybe I’m just trendy.  I am feeling pretty pithy these days, and you can take that any way you like.

Inspiration FAIL.

I totally know how you feel.  Chris Hayes @ Riskital is eating my lunch on the risk subject so far.  I see the passion and the willingness to tackle anything in his posts that I had 2 years ago.

So I ask myself if I’m burnt out on blogging.  The answer is no. I get excited about the subjects I like to write about again and again - but now it takes more time to dig something up.  With past content, I’ve just gotten to the point where I’m not sure when I should be repeating myself and when I shouldn’t.  It’s feeling like Blogging is hitting middle age for me.

I dunno, was able to go from Idea to published in 6 months, and yes it did take away from blogging for a bit, but found that I would trial balloon chapters on the blog to see if anyone would object or freak out. It all worked out in the end. If you write a book, I will buy it.
